Muladhara (Sanskrit) Meaning: Root
Celestial Body: Saturn:
Located at the base of the spine, the root chakra governs the coccygeal plexus, legs, feet and large intestine. Survival is the main issue pertaining to the root, such as what diet is healthiest for us, what exercise allows our bodies to function optimally, and how we nurture ourselves when we are sick.
The underlying right of the first chakra is the right to exist. Self-preservation links the root chakra to all instinctual behaviors. Some of the competitive areas of life lead us to test the boundaries between self-preservation and danger. There is a thrill in testing ourselves, especially as children. Fear is a mechanism of self-preservation and has its place. Strengthening the root chakra rebalances our judgment.
When we are denied our basic necessities of survival – food, clothing, shelter, medical care, physical touch – our rights have been threatened. Consequently, malfunctions may occur such as obesity, hemorrhoids, constipation, anorexia, knee troubles, bone disorders, frequent fears, inability to focus, inability to be still.
Red is the essential color for the root chakra. This color has the lowest vibration rate in the color spectrum. If you have any difficulty with any root issues, color visualization is a powerful aid to self-healing. Meditation is also quite a powerful healer – to visualize the strong roots of a tree, deep in the earth, seeking the nourishment and energy of the earth itself. To feel grounded with the sense of acceptance, individuality and courage within the material world.
When working with a particular chakra you can try wearing clothes of its color range, or putting appropriately colored objects into your living environment.return
